The Eudora Welty House and Garden will host a reading from Paulette Jiles on Thursday, February 16. Jiles will read from her new book at the Education and Visitor Center at 5:30 p.m. The novel, News of the World, was a finalist for the 2016 National Book Award in fiction. Lemuria Books will be on site to sell copies of that and other books by Jiles, who will sign beginning at 5 p.m. A reception will follow.

News of the World is the story of an aging, itinerant reader of the news to paying audiences who agrees to transport a young captive of the Kiowa back to her people in the aftermath of the Civil War. Judges of the National Book Award describe her book as “an adventure story, filled with danger and incident; a western, meticulously researched and rendered; and a two-hundred-page prose poem with poetry’s usual virtues of compression, resonance, beauty, and power.”

Paulette Jiles is a poet and memoirist. She is the author of Cousins, a memoir, and the bestselling novels Enemy Women and Stormy Weather. She lives in San Antonio, Texas.

The Eudora Welty House and Garden interprets the life of the internationally acclaimed author. Tours are by reservation Tuesday through Friday and the second Saturday of each month. The house is located at 1119 Pinehurst Street in Jackson and is operated by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.
