Purloined Letters, Petrified Men, and More Teachers Workshop therron Fri, 01/28/2022 - 11:27

The Eudora Welty House & Garden will host the virtual teachers workshop, "Purloined Letters, Petrified Men, and More: Welty, Poe, and the Confluences of Mystery Fiction" led by Michael Pickard, Millsaps College professor of English and creative writing, and Suzanne Marrs, Welty Foundation Scholar-in-Residence and Millsaps College emerita professor of English. Registration fee is $40 and participants will be given completion forms to send in to Millsaps College to receive their .5 CEU credit.

On Mondays at noon, the Eudora Welty House & Garden will present online book discussions of William Faulkner's 1929 novel, The Sound and the Fury, led by University of Mississippi professor Jay Watson and Welty's friend and biographer Suzanne Marrs. Arbor Day Tree Giveaway

In recognition of Mississippi's Arbor Day, the Eudora Welty House & Garden will host a free giveaway of native trees provided by the Mississippi Forestry Commission on Saturday, February 12. Enjoy complimentary cups of apple cider with scavenger hunts, all-ages coloring sheets, and name games interpreting significant trees in the Welty Garden. Face masks and social distancing guidelines are required.

Shoe Bird Buttons

On Saturday, January 15, at 10 a.m., Eudora Welty House & Garden education specialist Jennifer Rose will read excerpts from Welty's only children's book, The Shoe Bird, after which children will engage in a hands-on activity. This event is free and open to the public. Face masks and social distancing guidelines are required.

MDAH 2021 Holiday Closures

In observance of New Year’s Day, The Two Mississippi Museums, Eudora Welty House & Garden, and Grand Village of the Natchez Indians will close early at 3 p.m. on Friday, December 31, and be closed on Saturday, January 1. The Nissan Cafe by Nick Wallace Culinary at the Two Mississippi Museums will be closed through Sunday, January 2.

The archives library will be closed Friday, December 31–Saturday, January 1.

One Writer's Garden Ten-Year Anniversary

On Tuesday, October 12, the Eudora Welty House & Garden will celebrate the tenth anniversary of the publication of One Writer's Garden by retired Welty Garden curator Susan Haltom. An outdoor book reading and discussion will be held in her honor. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or picnic blankets to this event. Copies of Haltom's book will be available for purchase at the Eudora Welty House Gift Shop.

Yoga in the Welty Garden

MDAH education specialist and certified yoga instructor Jennifer Rose will lead free yoga classes in the Welty Garden on Tuesdays at 7 a.m. Guests should bring their own mats, towels, water bottles, and wear comfortable clothing. Guests will be required to socially distance themselves and wear face masks when not on the mat.

Growing Heirloom Camellias

The Eudora Welty House & Garden will present an outdoor gardening workshop on growing and cultivating heirloom camellias with special guest Paige Mizell of Mizell's Camellia Hill Nursery.
