History Is Lunch: Alex Heard, "The Willie McGee Case and Jim Crow Mississippi"

At noon on Wednesday, April 29, Alex Heard, editorial director of Outside magazine, will reexamine the lasting mysteries surrounding the case of Willie McGee as part of the History Is Lunch series.  In 1945, McGee was sentenced to death, prompting national protests at the White House. New York labor lawyer Bella Abzug and civil rights advocate William Patterson risked their lives to plead his innocence. This free event will take place in the Craig H. Neilsen Auditorium of the Two Mississippi Museums and will stream live on the MDAH Facebook page and YouTube channel. Copies of Heard’s book, The Eyes of Willie McGee: A Tragedy of Race, Sex, and Secrets in the Jim Crow South, will be available for purchase, and a book signing will follow.
